The Currency of the Empire

The game uses Pounds Sterling – a currency based on the value of various weights of sterling silver.

The different terms used are pence (p), shillings (s) and pounds (£). Conversion rates are 12 pence to a shilling, 20 shillings to a pound.

The GURPS $ is equal to one shilling (about the cost of a – quite large – loaf of bread).

You’ll get used to it.

A note on starting wealth - Unless you specify otherwise, and want to go into great detail about what you have spent your wealth on, you will be assumed to have sunk 80% of the below starting wealth levels into being “settled” as appropriate to your wealth level. Wealth represents your “worth”, not how much cash you have in the bank.
If you have a character based reason for wealth being sunk into something else (like a gadgeteer that has “invested” his wealth in a suite of inventions) then we can arrange. The 80% rule is just an easy shortcut if you lead a non-unusual lifestyle.
